Here are Five Fast Facts with our Health Policy Analyst, Amber Bellazaire!

1. What makes you feel drawn to your work at the League?

I enjoy reading, writing, and thinking deeply about complex questions, and I’m able to do each of these in my role at the League. I’m very grateful for that. My hope is that being a part of the team at the League improves, even if only in a small way, the health and well-being of people living in Michigan.

2. What are the top three things you’re working on this year that you’re most excited for or are the most impactful?

  1. I’m examining ways our state can support people in keeping or obtaining affordable health coverage, such as adopting the ICHIA option and thoughtfully approaching the unwinding of the federal public health emergency. Also, there’s a forthcoming League report on the ways Michigan can continue to increase kids’ coverage rates, so stay tuned!
  2. I plan to build on an earlier presentation about community health workers and share more about how our state could support greater sustainability and use of community health worker programs.
  3. As always, I’ll continue to examine ways to foster healthy families in Michigan, whether that be advocating for continued investments in home visiting, providing education about the many benefits of doula services, or supporting greater data collection on the well-being of Michigan fathers.

3. What did you want to be when you grew up?

An English professor.

4. What is your favorite thing about living in Michigan?

Fall foliage and the Great Lakes!

5. If you had a warning label, what would yours say?

Feed if grumpy.
