Welcome to Five Fast Facts! As the League kicks off our next chapter, we wanted to introduce (or reintroduce) ourselves. Get to know us and what makes us who we are.

Here are Five Fast Facts with our Assistant to the President, Phyllis Killips!

1. What makes you feel drawn to your work at the League?

I enjoy fundraising, I’ve been doing it for quite a while. But overall, I’m drawn to the people more than the work—the League has been such a great place all these years. The variety has kept me here; I really like that I don’t do the same thing all the time.

2. What are the top three things you’re working on this year that you’re most excited for or are the most impactful?

  1. All my work is focused on setting and arranging meetings. And I always do a lot of planning and preparation for our public policy forums, and that’s fun to see it all come together.
  2. I’m a social media person. It’s been exciting to see our outreach on social media and see how we’ve grown.
  3. I enjoy raising money; I see that my hard work is helping Michiganders who have struggled.

3. You have a very special fun fact to share with us…

Yes! Today is my 45th anniversary at the League. This is the only job I’ve ever had. My dad and his brother owned a print shop, and I worked in the bindery room during the summer before I started working at the League. But this was my first big job. I started two days before I turned 18. It’s hard to believe I’ve been here for all this time. That says a lot about the organization. It went by so fast! Now I’m ready for time to slow down. (Editor’s note: Check out this story celebrating Phyllis’s 40th Anniversary with the League to learn more about her history and many of the changes she’s seen throughout her career.)

4. What did you want to be when you grew up?

I wanted to be an actress. My older daughter is an actress now. I keep asking if I can have a small part in her next movie, and she says I won’t get paid. But that’s fine, I would love to do that! They filmed a portion of her next movie in my dining room—part of my house is going to be in her next movie! It was so much fun to watch.

5. What is your hidden talent?

I love to make people laugh. Even at my own expense sometimes! I love to laugh. Once when I was going through a rough time, my dad told me, “You always have a smile on your face when you come through the door.” I told him, “I can either smile or cry.” I got a lot of that from my dad—he was always telling me jokes. He was such a funny man. I’ve had some unhappy times in my life, but I’d rather be happy. (Editor’s note II: Making people laugh is not so much of a ‘hidden’ talent as it is a well-known trait of Phyllis’s. She always has a bright smile, a funny story to tell, and a laugh to share.)

Happy 45th League-iversary, Phyllis! We’re so lucky to have you!
