League celebrates Senate passage of Michigan Momnibus bill package

Legislation will offer long-overdue solutions to some of the most critical issues within Michigan’s maternal and perinatal health systems

LANSING—The Michigan League for Public Policy issued the following statement on the Michigan Senate’s passage of most of the Michigan Momnibus bill package, which offers long-overdue solutions to some of the most critical issues within Michigan’s maternal and perinatal health systems.

“We applaud the Michigan Senate for seizing this important opportunity to make meaningful improvements to the way we care for mothers and babies in our state, especially mothers and babies of color. Each and every one of them deserves high-quality healthcare, but racism within our health systems and place-based factors have led to barriers to access and precious lives lost.

Approximately 80 to 90 maternal deaths occur in Michigan each year and nearly 64% of maternal deaths related to pregnancy are preventable. And, sadly, stark racial disparities come to light when you dig deeper into the latest state data, with pregnancy-associated maternal mortality rates for both American Indian/Alaska Native and Black mothers shown to be nearly two times higher than the rates for white mothers.

“That’s why this legislation is so critically important and long overdue. It aims to address systemic racism and other social determinants of health within Michigan’s maternal and perinatal health systems through a comprehensive, multifaceted approach.

“To the lawmakers and advocates who have championed this legislation and helped get it across the finish line in the Senate, we extend our sincere gratitude. The Michigan Momnibus package will help all Michigan moms and babies receive the care they need and deserve, resulting in better health outcomes and lives saved. We hope the House will take up these bills swiftly, and that the Momnibus package will be passed in full in 2024.”
