Here are Five Fast Facts with our Writing and Messaging Specialist, Mikell Frey!

1. What makes you feel drawn to your work at the League?

I love that the League is committed to making Michigan a more welcoming and equitable place where all people can thrive. When looking to change my career last year, the League’s mission is really what inspired me to apply for my job. I’m so proud to be a part of a passionate and dedicated team that is working hard to ensure brighter futures for all Michiganders.

2. What are the top three things you’re working on this year that you’re most excited for or are the most impactful?

  1. I recently finished up the League’s 2023 Annual Report, which was a really fun project. In addition to producing the content, I worked in Canva (for the first time!) to design it. Annual reports provide such an important opportunity to reflect back on the past year and communicate about your organization’s accomplishments.
  2. The League just recently hosted the 2nd Annual Champions for Kids Luncheon, which was a team effort that I was proud to be a part of once again this year. Similar to the inaugural luncheon, this year’s event was a huge success and really helped in getting the latest data and trends on child well-being in Michigan into the hands of hundreds of stakeholders across our state.
  3. As a part of my job, I help draft op-eds and blogs on the League’s various policy priorities. This includes sharing relevant data and amplifying the stories of those who are most impacted by policy choices in our state. I have always loved to write and I also enjoy talking with people about their lived experiences, so I am looking forward to continuing to expand upon that work this year. The blog section of the League’s website is a great place to read up on what the League is currently advocating for and why it matters for Michiganders and our state as a whole.

3. What did you want to be when you grew up?

I wanted to be a rock star when I was really young. My dad loved a lot of women rockers, especially Heart, so you could often find me lip synching (or just full-on singing) their songs into a hairbrush in my room as a child.

4. Do you collect anything?

I collect handmade ceramic coffee mugs. My mom is a potter and I have always loved pottery. I typically find a handmade mug to buy any place I visit.

5. List any random fun fact about yourself!

I lived in 12 different places, including 10 different states, before I turned 24. My dad was in the Navy, so we moved a lot growing up, and then I bounced around to a couple different places during and just after college before coming to Michigan to be closer to family.
