THE STAKES ARE HIGH FOR MICHIGAN

In July, President Donald Trump passed into law a sweeping federal bill that will significantly increase poverty, hunger, and health insecurity across the country. The so-called “One Big Beautiful Bill Act” (OBBBA) — which is in no way beautiful for our nation — authorized trillions of dollars in spending while enacting deep cuts to key safety net programs like Medicaid and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). These changes are projected to shift a substantial share of the nation’s resources away from people and families with low incomes, redistributing money to the wealthy at an unprecedented scale.

The OBBBA also gives broad, unchecked authority to the executive branch, including billions of dollars earmarked for a mass deportation initiative that will fundamentally alter the nation’s immigration system. Many provisions were passed without clear legislative detail, granting wide discretion to the Trump administration.

In addition to the human toll, the bill adds an estimated $2.4 trillion to the national deficit. Despite widespread public opposition — polling showed that a majority of Americans were against the measure — the legislation moved forward with strong backing from Republican leadership.

The repercussions for Michigan are particularly severe. The state will be responsible for covering an estimated $8.5 billion in Medicaid expansion costs and over $400 million in SNAP expenditures previously funded by the federal government. As a result, more than half a million Michiganders could lose health coverage, and 123,000 may lose access to food assistance. These cuts will have broad ripple effects across communities, particularly among children, older adults, veterans, and people with disabilities.

This report outlines the specific consequences of the bill for Michigan’s residents, health care infrastructure, and economy. It also examines how these policy changes undermine public health and economic stability at both the state and national levels.

Please note: Although the League does not view this bill as ‘beautiful’, we do refer to it in this report as the OBBBA for consistency and clarity.
