Here are Five Fast Facts with our Kids Count Data Analyst, Kelli Bowers!

1. What makes you feel drawn to your work at the League?

I just really enjoy researching and learning. I love being able to not only collect data, but to analyze it and find meaning from it. I think this is a powerful tool that can give a new perspective/narrative to some of the social inequities in our country.

2. What are the top three things you’re working on this year that you’re most excited for or are the most impactful?

  1. Our annual county profiles are a great way for people to find out how their children are faring at the state and local level. They are a key tool in helping community members to identify key trends in data across education, health & safety, family & community, and economic security as well as advocate for investments in their families and communities.
  2. I work year-round to update all indicators on the Kids Count Data Center. These updates are crucial to communities to actively track and obtain the most up-to-date information on Michigan’s children.
  3. Lastly, I am excited to delve into my new work researching adverse childhood experiences (ACEs). ACEs contribute to a variety of adverse outcomes in adulthood, so bringing them to light will help fight against their harmful effects.

3. What is your favorite thing about living in Michigan?

The Yoop! Specifically, the way they say “bag” and the drive down US-2 along the northern coast of Lake Michigan.

4. You are a speaker or special guest at an event — what is your walk-on song as you take the stage?

Music for a Sushi Restaurant – Harry Styles.

5. If you were an animal, what would you be?

If I were an animal, I would be my blue heeler dog, Sophie. She lives the life! Treats, walks and snoozing all day would be the best.
