Michigan’s third-grade reading scores have been on the decline for several years. This year, they’ve reached a record low.

Roughly 60% of Michigan third graders aren’t reading at a proficient level, according to results from the 2024 Michigan Student Test of Educational Progress, known as MSTEP. Anne Kuhnen with the Michigan League for Public Policy says this is a continued trend showing a need for greater investment in Michigan schools.

“Reading scores have been declining for over a decade now. New spending on our schools is not keeping up with inflation, the cost of other items in the economy,” said Kuhnen.
