Michigan League for Public Policy welcomes new Chief Development Officer Kate Powers

Powers has extensive nonprofit fundraising experience, serving most recently as the Chief Operating Officer and Chief Development Officer for Ele’s Place

LANSING—The Michigan League for Public Policy is pleased to welcome Kate Powers, who will serve as the League’s first Chief Development Officer.

Powers is a seasoned nonprofit and fundraising professional who comes to the League after working for more than 10 years for Ele’s Place, most recently as their Chief Operating Officer and Chief Development Officer. Prior to her tenure with Ele’s Place, Powers also served in development roles with the Opportunity Resource Fund, Michigan State University and ConnectMichigan Alliance. Powers began her new role with the League this week and will be working alongside other members of the League’s leadership team to establish a formal fundraising program for the organization as well as a new department.

“Kate is a passionate and visionary fundraising professional with a wealth of experience in successfully securing funding for programming that centers the needs of children, families and other populations in need of support,” said Michigan League for Public Policy President and CEO Monique Stanton. “As we continue on in our 114-year history of lifting up Michiganders who have been left out of prosperity, we look forward to working alongside Kate to strengthen our organization’s development strategy and build out a team that can put that strategy into action under her esteemed leadership.”

“Throughout my career, it has been so important for me to be working to move forward a mission that I am passionate about and to be able to share that passion with others who may have an interest in providing financial support. The League’s mission is very personal to me as I have always believed in advocating for policies that help people to not just survive, but thrive in their communities,” said Michigan League for Public Policy Chief Development Officer Kate Powers. “It’s an honor to step into this new role and lead a team in garnering support for the important work the League does on behalf of Michiganders across the state.”

Ele’s Place is a statewide, multi-site nonprofit that serves as a healing center for grieving children and teens who have experienced a death in their lives. In Powers’ role with Ele’s Place, she served as the agency’s primary fundraising and business development officer, working with regional fundraising staff to execute fundraising and business development goals strategically. As a key member of the executive team, she also managed and supported the implementation and creation of the organization’s multi-year strategic plan, working with staff and board members to ensure the organization’s growth.

In addition to her people-centered professional career, Powers has also given back to her community by serving as a trustee on the the East Lansing Public Schools Board of Education from 2015-2022. She has also been a sustaining member of the Junior League of Lansing since 2004.

Powers has a Bachelor of Arts in social relations from Michigan State University’s James Madison College and received her Certificate in Fundraising Management from the Lilly Family School of Philanthropy at Indiana University.
