League condemns Congressional budget blueprints that slash social safety net and prioritize tax breaks for the wealthy

Deep cuts to essential programs like Medicaid, SNAP will cause widespread harm

LANSING—The Michigan League for Public Policy is strongly opposed to the budget resolution adopted by the U.S. Senate today as well as the proposed budget resolution that the U.S. House is expected to take up next week. The statement below can be attributed to League President and CEO Monique Stanton.

“We condemn the U.S. Senate and House budget resolutions, which are clearly paving the way for tax cuts for the rich at the expense of American families who are already struggling to get by, including families right here in Michigan.

“The Senate blueprint, passed today, and the House GOP proposal, anticipated to be taken up next week, lay the groundwork for deep cuts in social safety net programs that millions of Michiganders rely on. In order to pay for significant tax breaks for the wealthiest families and profitable corporations, cuts to Medicaid and the slashing of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) are on the table. Weakening these programs will undoubtedly cause widespread harm to families, children, seniors, people with disabilities, veterans and workers across our country and state. Federal policymakers should reject proposals that jeopardize programs like Medicaid and SNAP and instead affirm their commitment to helping more people access the essential programs they need to survive.

“Federal funding cuts to programs like these will have a detrimental impact on the state budget and, ultimately, the people of Michigan. Federal funds regularly make up more than 40% of our state’s budget and the majority of our state’s federal funding goes to the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, which administers Medicaid to roughly 1 in 4 Michiganders and SNAP to roughly 1 in 7 Michiganders. These are not just numbers; they are people. They are our neighbors, friends, co-workers and family members. Attempts to weaken the social safety net programs that struggling people rely upon in order to further line the pockets of the wealthiest people and businesses in our country should be called out for what they are: deplorable and cruel.”
