In Blog: Factually Speaking, Health Care

This past 4th of July, people across the U.S. celebrated the 250th anniversary of our nation with fireworks, cookouts and time with family. However, another milestone is coming up this month that is also important to recognize: the 61st anniversary of Medicaid.

Medicaid was created over six decades ago as a promise that people would be able to receive the care they need, regardless of their income. In Michigan alone, nearly 2.5 million people rely on Medicaid every day for their healthcare needs, including children, seniors, people with disabilities and working families who have nowhere else to turn.

Medicaid’s anniversary comes at a critical moment. The program is now under serious threat at the federal level, and the stakes for Michigan families could not be higher. The consequences of federal changes will be felt in every community across the state.

With that in mind, we hope you will consider joining us and other state partner organizations from the Protect MI Care coalition at the Michigan State Capitol tomorrow, July 30 — the day Medicaid was signed into law — for the March for Medicaid. The march will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and League staff will be proudly marching alongside many Protect MI Care coalition partners and any other community members interested in joining us.

With this march, we’re celebrating what Medicaid has meant to the Michiganders who receive it and making clear that we will not stand by while their coverage is cut. You can learn more and RSVP for the march at https://bit.ly/4g4tHxG.

With healthcare top of mind, I also wanted to take a moment to address our President and CEO Monique Stanton’s medical leave of absence. For those of you who may not have seen her update earlier this month, Monique is out on a medical leave for approximately eight to 10 months to address a very treatable form of breast cancer. She has publicly shared this news and she is optimistic about her treatment. She is an integral part of our organization and we fully support her as she focuses on her health. During her leave, I will be serving as acting CEO and I have full confidence in our team to carry on in the League’s important work in the months ahead.

In her update to partners, Monique took the opportunity to share that she is grateful to have paid family and medical leave available to her during this time in her life and advocated for all Michiganders to have that same lifeline. The League, alongside our many state partners, will continue on in our fight for a statewide paid family and medical leave program while we also push back against the federal cuts made to critical healthcare coverage like Medicaid. This fight continues because we recognize that healthcare is a human right, not a commodity, and that everyone benefits from healthy families and healthy communities.

We hope you will consider joining us at the Capitol tomorrow as we march for the people of Michigan and the future of their healthcare. We also appreciate your ongoing partnership and support as we move forward with our advocacy efforts and stand firmly in Monique’s corner during her healing journey. We look forward to her joining us again.
