League urges U.S. Senate to follow the lead of the U.S. House in protecting health care for millions of Americans by bringing back the Advanced Premium Tax Credits

Lansing—The Michigan League for Public Policy has issued the following statement on the U.S. House’s bipartisan vote today to bring back the Advanced Premium Tax Credits under the Affordable Care Act (ACA) for three years. The League is urging the U.S. Senate to protect health care for millions of Americans by following suit. The statement can be attributed to League President and CEO Monique Stanton.

“As millions of Americans across our country face major spikes in their health care costs, we want to thank members of the U.S. House who voted today to bring back the Advanced Premium Tax Credits for those who rely on them, including nearly 500,000 Michiganders. Affordable health care should be a basic right, not a luxury, but Republican members of Congress allowed the credits to expire last year amid an affordability crisis that already has families struggling to make ends meet.

“Reversing course now will not undo all of the damage that has been done, with 1 in 4 ACA marketplace enrollees either planning to or already having dropped coverage, but it’s a positive step in the right direction. We are urging members of the U.S. Senate to follow the lead of the U.S. House in mitigating the harm that has been caused by voting to protect health care for the people they represent.

“Without the tax credits, Michigan premiums have increased by 70%. As a result, households in some communities in the state are seeing monthly health care cost increases that are exceeding more than $1,000. This is unconscionable and these catastrophic affordability issues need to be urgently addressed so that families can continue to visit their doctors, fill their prescriptions and receive the lifesaving treatments they need in 2026 and beyond.

“The stage has been set, once again, and Republican members of the U.S. Senate now have yet another opportunity to finally do what is right. We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: it’s time to stop playing politics with people’s health. Bring back the Advanced Premium Tax Credits.”
