CREC projections underscore the need to improve the state’s revenue sufficiency to meet the needs of Michigan families

LANSING—The Michigan League for Public Policy issued the following statement on the State of Michigan’s Consensus Revenue Estimating Conference (CREC) held today. The statement can be attributed to Michigan League for Public Policy President and CEO Monique Stanton.

“Today’s revenue projections truly underscore the importance of looking at the complete budget picture. The downward adjustments in state revenues, driven largely by intentional tax changes made last year, will constrain our ability to provide for our residents. At the same time, the lives of Michigan families will also be significantly impacted by federal threats and attacks on essentials like health care, education, food assistance, housing and more. We cannot continue to do more with less. Put simply, the state has a revenue sufficiency problem that must be addressed to meet this moment.

“When policymakers in Washington prioritized tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans over health care and the costs of groceries, they also caused a major strain on Michigan’s state budget. Now is not the time for lawmakers to be pushing for steep tax cuts or shifting funds around. They need to look at the big picture: what is really needed to ensure Michiganders are thriving. Right now, improving the state’s revenue structure to best serve the people of Michigan is essential and should be prioritized, while also making sure that a balanced and equitable budget is done on time.

“As the governor and state lawmakers begin to craft their respective budgets, they need to mitigate the federal harm to Michiganders. Maintaining strong Medicaid and SNAP policies is necessary so that families do not fall through the cracks. Improving child care affordability and accessibility, reducing the rising cost of safe and affordable housing, continuing to invest in deeply impactful programs like Rx Kids, and making stronger, sustained investments in the needs of Michigan’s students are also critically important.

“When we talk about meeting this moment, we recognize that it will be difficult due to financial strain. But we also know a meaningful and impactful budget is possible if state leaders focus on strengthening revenues and investing in what matters most: the people of Michigan.”
