In Blog: Factually Speaking, Budget

Around this time last year, we were celebrating one of our favorite budget holidays: the Consensus Revenue Estimating Conference (CREC) marks the official kickoff of budget season in Michigan and it is usually a budget party over here for us wonks. (Check out last year’s CRECfest, for example.) But due to federal attacks, things just aren’t looking as festive this year. But we are still eager for the start of a new budget season, and we’re ready to advocate for the priorities that will put Michiganders first.

Here are five fast facts to get you up to speed so you know what’s on deck for CREC:

1. CREC is held twice each year — in January and May — and determines the anticipated General Fund and School Aid Fund revenues for the year. The conference held in January sets the basis for the governor’s budget recommendation (typically announced in February), and the conference held in May sets the basis for the final budget.

2. CREC begins at 9 a.m. on Friday, January 16, 2026 and will show us how things are looking for our state budget. The meeting will be available to watch on House TV and Senate TV.

3. Official revenue forecasts for fiscal years 2026, 2027 and 2028 will be provided. Set to speak are state fiscal experts from the House and Senate Fiscal Agencies, Department of Treasury and State Budget Office; economists from the Research Seminar on Quantitative Economics at the University of Michigan; and other experts and economists.

4. We need policymakers to mitigate the harm inflicted by federal threats and attacks. The stakes are high. The harmful federal Republican megabill along with ongoing threats and attacks on health care, education, food assistance, housing, immigrants and more means that it’s especially crucial to get a balanced and equitable budget done on time. CREC marks the beginning of that process.

5. Budget season means it’s time to get to work. Get a refresher on the Michigan budget cycle. Read up on how you can influence the state budget. Start working on your legislative and budget priorities and outline advocacy plans. Keep up with the League, as we’ll follow the budget closely and provide updates. We’ll also be releasing The People’s Budget for 2027 later this year, which pairs community input with data and research to develop bold policy solutions that put Michiganders first. (Check out The People’s Budget for 2026 here.)

We’re hoping to see our state budget priorities centered on Michigan’s most important resource — our people. Stay up to date through our website and on Facebook, Instagram and Bluesky as Michigan’s budget takes shape.
