League responds to Michigan House Appropriations Committee’s vote to disapprove $645 million in funding for vital state projects and programs

Lansing—The Michigan League for Public Policy has issued the following statement on the Michigan House Appropriations Committee’s vote to disapprove $645 million in funding for vital state projects and programs. The statement can be attributed to League President and CEO Monique Stanton.

“This was an abrupt decision that is political in nature. As a nonpartisan policy organization, we put people first, not politics. Our state lawmakers should be doing the same.

“Let’s be clear, these cuts made by House Republicans will negatively impact countless people in Michigan at a time when they need to be prioritized, especially given the harmful federal policies that are already causing them direct harm. We are shocked to see that the committee would take back funding for important programs like Rx Kids and others that would significantly improve the health and well-being of Michiganders.

“We are also disheartened at the lack of transparency. This partisan vote slashed a significant amount of funding for programs across a swath of state departments with no opportunity for public feedback or discussion on the human impact of their choices. They have further eroded public trust in state governance with this unprecedented vote.”
