League Denounces Failure of Drive SAFE Bill, Calls for Action to Support Immigrants and Economy

LANSING, Mich. – The Michigan League for Public Policy strongly denounced the failure of the Drive SAFE legislation in the Michigan House of Representatives as a missed opportunity to support immigrant communities, strengthen the state’s economy, and improve public safety. Monique Stanton, President and CEO of the Michigan League for Public Policy, addresses the harmful consequences of this decision in the following statement:

“The Michigan League for Public Policy denounces the failure of the Drive SAFE bill in the Michigan House of Representatives. The political theater that was on display does nothing to improve the lives of immigrants who are simply trying to provide for their families and contribute to our state. Instead, it keeps thousands of Michigan residents in a cycle of hardship and uncertainty.

“Since 2008, approximately 100,000 Michigan residents have been unable to obtain a driver’s license due to their immigration status. These individuals are our neighbors, workers, and local business owners, yet they are denied the ability to obtain a driver’s license and auto insurance —making everyday tasks like getting to work, school, or the grocery store an ongoing challenge.

“Restoring driver’s licenses is about dignity, public safety, and economic growth. Undocumented immigrants hold $2.5 billion in spending power in Michigan, and allowing them to drive legally would boost state revenue, lower auto insurance premiums, and make our roads safer. Employers and job seekers alike would benefit, expanding opportunities for workers and helping businesses fill critical roles.

“The Drive SAFE bill was a practical solution that had nothing to do with voting rights or citizenship—it was simply about letting people live and work without fear. Michigan is already struggling with population growth and workforce shortages. Rejecting this bill is a step backward.

“We urge lawmakers to move past political games and take real action to strengthen our communities. Michigan thrives when all residents can fully participate in society—including the ability to drive safely and legally. We will continue fighting for this essential change.”
