League Condemns Efforts to Dismantle U.S. Department of Education

LANSING, Mich. – The Michigan League for Public Policy strongly condemned the adoption of House Resolution 55 by the Michigan House of Representatives, a resolution that supports the elimination of the U.S. Department of Education. The below statement can be attributed to League President and CEO Monique Stanton:

“The Michigan League for Public Policy strongly condemns the Michigan House’s adoption of HR 55 and the broader effort to dismantle the U.S. Department of Education. President Donald Trump’s executive order aimed at eliminating the Department is a direct threat to Michigan’s students, schools, and communities.

“The Department of Education plays a critical role in ensuring that all students—especially those from low-income backgrounds, students with disabilities, and English-language learners—receive the resources and protections they need to succeed. If dismantled, Michigan would face devastating consequences, including putting at risk approximately $2.2 billion in federal funding, which makes up 10% of the state’s K-12 budget. Schools across every Intermediate School District rely on this funding, particularly for programs like preschool, special education, Early On, Head Start, and the Great Start Readiness Program.

“Michigan already ranks among the bottom 10 states in education, and eliminating the Department of Education would only worsen outcomes for our children. Education is not just a moral responsibility but essential to our state’s economic stability and future workforce. The Department of Education is vital in supporting student learning, ensuring school safety, and strengthening communities. We cannot afford to take a step backward.

“What’s more is that this move will increase barriers to accessing post-secondary degrees and credentials, slowing down access to important financial assistance, like Pell Grants. College is already too expensive for many Michigan families, and delays in accessing support will mean students will have to defer or forego a degree completely.

“We urge Michigan leaders to reject this reckless proposal and instead focus on strengthening our public education system to ensure every child has access to quality learning opportunities from early childhood through high school and beyond.”
