League applauds governor’s family- and worker-focused plans on paid leave, reproductive healthcare, affordable prescriptions and healthcare

LANSING—The Michigan League for Public Policy issued the following statement in response to today’s announcement from Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, outlining her legislative priorities for the end of the year, which include a paid family and medical leave program for Michigan, a plan to reduce the cost of prescription drugs, a plan to codify the cost-saving measures in the Affordable Care Act and a goal to increase access to reproductive healthcare, all of which the League has long supported. The statement below can be attributed to League President and CEO Monique Stanton.

“Once again, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has shown her strong support for Michigan workers and families by announcing that one of her legislative priorities for the end of the year will be a push for a paid family and medical leave program for Michigan. This would be a game-changer for our state that would effectively boost the health and economic well-being of millions of workers and families, while also making Michigan more competitive in attracting and retaining talent for the state’s workforce at a time when we are losing people to other states at an alarming rate.

As it stands today, working Michiganders without access to paid leave are at serious risk of losing their job or livelihood when they or a family member falls ill or when they need to care for a new child. They are often faced with impossible choices, being forced to decide between taking the time they need away from work or securing their next paycheck. This not only harms a family’s economic security, but also impacts our state’s workforce participation and economic growth. We hope the Michigan Legislature will follow the governor’s lead in making Michigan one of the growing number of states in our country–13 in total as well as Washington, D.C.–with a paid leave law on the books.

The governor also maintained her commitment to ensuring that Michiganders have access to reproductive healthcare. This, too, is critical for workers and families as they navigate physical and economic challenges. Access to reproductive healthcare ensures that Michiganders can be healthier and more empowered.

We were also pleased to hear about Gov. Whitmer’s efforts to make prescription drugs more affordable. The cost of medications causes strain for so many families around the state, often meaning people need to choose between accessing life-saving prescriptions or putting food on the table. A Prescription Drug Affordability Board, which Gov. Whitmer proposes, would help temper the cost of medications, plus bring down healthcare costs for employers and local governments.”
