League applauds legislation to create a Prescription Drug Affordability Board to lower life-saving medication costs for Michiganders

LANSING—The Michigan League for Public Policy has joined several state partners in advocating for the Michigan Legislature to make a Prescription Drug Affordability Board a top priority in its policy agenda for Michigan. The League issued the following statement in response to today’s introduction of legislation to create a Prescription Drug Affordability Board. The statement can be attributed to League President and CEO Monique Stanton.

“All Michiganders should be able to afford the prescription medications they depend upon to live long and healthy lives. Creating a Prescription Drug Affordability Board (PDAB) would help in reining in increasingly unaffordable prescription drug costs so that Michigan families no longer have to choose between buying life-saving medications and putting food on the table. In addition to having a direct and lasting impact on Michigan families, a PDAB would bring down healthcare costs for employers, local municipalities and other groups that insure people, while also resulting in improved oversight of pharmaceutical companies.

The League is excited about new legislation to create a PDAB for Michigan at a time when prescription drug costs are consistently rising faster than inflation and too many Michiganders are forgoing filling their prescriptions as a result. In fact, the Michigan Prescription Drug Task Force has found that nearly a third of Michigan residents, ages 19 to 64, have stopped taking their prescriptions because of costs and 6 in 10 Michiganders, 50 and older, reported concerns over not being able to afford to fill their prescriptions in a survey conducted by the AARP in 2022. We applaud Senators Camilleri, McDonald Rivet and Klinefelt for introducing this important legislation, and we hope it will be met with swift action this session.

With this new proposed legislation on the table, the Michigan Legislature has a real opportunity to follow the lead of several other states in establishing an independent, nonpartisan board of experts that can use evidence-backed research to successfully set upper payment limits for the most expensive prescription drugs on the market.”
