Four Michiganders filed a lawsuit against the Trump Administration Friday challenging the work requirements in place for Medicaid eligibility.

The people behind the lawsuit are low-income and are represented by “a coalition of state and national health care advocates.” The complaint challenges Michigan’s new work requirements that are set to take effect Jan. 1, 2020. The four people are enrolled in Michigan’s expansion of Medicaid, known as Healthy Michigan.

In February 2019, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer accepted the terms and conditions of the state’s work requirements that were backed by Republicans in the Legislature. Whitmer noted that between 61,000 and 183,000 people are at risk of losing health coverage due to the work requirements, according to the complaint.

The National Health Law Program, the Michigan Center for Civil Justice and the Michigan Poverty Law Program are representing the Michigan plaintiffs in the civil suit that was filed in district court in Washington, D.C.
