League celebrates passage of bills that will prohibit housing discrimination based on source of income

Lansing—The Michigan League for Public Policy issued the following statement on the Michigan Legislature’s passage of bills early this morning that will prohibit discrimination in housing based on payment type. Discrimination from landlords has limited the effectiveness of Housing Choice Vouchers (HCVs) and other non-wage sources of income, including social security and veteran’s benefits, for families in need of affordable housing. These bills will ensure that Michiganders are not rejected based on the way they pay their rent; once enacted, landlords who manage five or more rental units can be sued by tenants who believe they’ve been the targets of discrimination.

The statement can be attributed to Monique Stanton, president and CEO of the Michigan League for Public Policy.

“These bills are a significant step toward resolving Michigan’s affordable housing crisis. All families in our state should have a safe, healthy place to live—stable housing means a brighter future for kids and communities. But for a long time, many Michiganders—especially those who use non-wage sources of income like Housing Choice Vouchers—have faced major barriers in obtaining safe, affordable housing due to discrimination from property owners, with HCV rejection rates shown to be highest in more affluent neighborhoods.

“People think of housing discrimination as a part of our history, but it is very much alive and well when landlords can reject potential tenants based solely on their method of rent payment. No statewide law has protected families from discrimination based on their use of HCVs or other non-wage sources of income, including social security or veteran’s benefits. But early this morning, the Michigan Legislature showed that they understood the critical need for permanent, safe and healthy homes for all by protecting the rights of all tenants, regardless of how they pay their rent.

“We look forward to further celebration when the governor signs this legislation into law and we’re grateful to the many policymakers and advocates who are working to end discrimination in housing here in Michigan.”
