League applauds Michigan Supreme Court decision ruling “adopt and amend” scheme unconstitutional

LANSING—The Michigan League for Public Policy issued the following statement on the Michigan Supreme Court’s decision regarding the 2018 Michigan Legislature’s move to block popular proposals on minimum wage and earned paid sick time from appearing on the ballot. The Legislature disenfranchised voters by instead adopting these proposals–which were polling at over a 70% approval rating and were likely to be approved by voters–and significantly amending them during lame-duck session.

The Michigan Supreme Court has ruled that the Legislature’s actions were unconstitutional. The statement below can be attributed to League President and CEO Monique Stanton.

“We applaud the Michigan Supreme Court for their decision today to rectify this injustice and show their strong support for families, communities and the economy. The ‘adopt and amend’ scheme of the Legislature in 2018 usurped the will of Michigan voters, and this ruling will not only help restore people’s faith in the system, it will help lift up families and kids across Michigan.

With our state’s poverty rate now ranking at the 13th highest in the nation, we need to be doing more to support hard-working Michiganders who are struggling on a daily basis to make ends meet. Raising the minimum wage and ensuring that all workers–including those working for smaller businesses–are provided with sufficient paid sick leave are two important steps in creating better health outcomes and stronger economic security for the people who make up the backbone of our economy.”
