CREC projections show need for new, equitable state revenues and smart investments

As economic outlook stabilizes after temporary pandemic recovery funds end, League calls for Legislature to prioritize Michiganders who struggle to make ends meet

LANSING—The Michigan League for Public Policy issued the following statement on the state Consensus Revenue Estimating Conference held today. The statement can be attributed to Michigan League for Public Policy President and CEO Monique Stanton.

“This morning’s revenue estimates are a return to reality. And the reality is that without the influx of recovery funds we’ve seen over the past few years, Michigan does not have enough revenue to support its residents long term. Michigan continues to lag behind many other states when it comes to a fair and equitable tax system, and it’s time for us to address it. The League continues to advocate for a graduated income tax so that our stateand more importantly our residentscan get ahead.

“As the state seeks to boost our population, we need to invest in what matterswhat will attract people to Michigan and ensure that our current residents stay here and raise their families here. And we can look to data from the past four years as a guide. What that data shows us is that pandemic-era investments worked. Raising revenues is critical to our state’s stability, but as we take steps toward a more equitable and stronger tax system, it’s critical that the funds we do have are invested in what matters to our neighbors. Each of the 2 million babies and kids in our state needs access to nutritious food, safe and affordable housing, high-quality care and education, and healthcare. Their families and neighbors shouldn’t have to struggle to make ends meet, as 39% of Michigan households do. We hope that as the governor and Legislature craft their budgets, they are keeping those households in mind.”
