The U.S. Census Bureau is gearing up to kick off the decennial attempt to count every person in the country and early predictions indicate it won’t be great for the Great Lakes State.

Data from the bureau estimates Michigan’s population at 9,986,857. Hovering around 10 million people seems great, especially since the state hasn’t hit that benchmark since before the recession. But the number paint a sluggish population growth.

Michigan’s population grew 0.03% since the previous year, which is well below the national average growth of approximately 0.5%.
