…Michigan placed particularly low in education. “That’s due to a number of factors, including the fact that fewer than half of three and four-year-olds are in preschool,” Michigan Kids Count Policy Director Anne Kuhnen tells 6 News. “Just about one in four 4th graders is proficient in reading. Only about one in four eighth graders is proficient in math.”

While the pandemic has contributed to the drop in test scores, researchers say they have been dropping for years.
