Revenue estimates set the stage for continued bipartisanship, investment in Michigan’s people

LANSING—The Michigan League for Public Policy issued the following statement on today’s Consensus Revenue Estimating Conference (CREC). It can be attributed to League Fiscal Policy Director Rachel Richards. The League also released an overview of their 2023 state budget priorities and their recommendations for investment of state American Rescue Plan dollars today. And League External Affairs Director Alex Rossman continued his personal crusade to make CREC happen, holding an online “CREC Your Head” discussion this morning.

“Today’s revenue estimates are welcome news for state residents, policy advocates and policymakers as we all continue to do our part to get through this demoralizing crisis. We at the League know that to really have an equitable recovery for all Michiganders, we need continued investment in our state, our communities, and our people–especially in the policies and programs that best support our kids and promote economic and racial equity. The revenue estimates reached today give our elected officials a great opportunity to build on the bipartisan 2022 state budget and continue to seek common ground on transformational investments with the state’s American Rescue Plan dollars and the 2023 budget.

“We are currently seeing how volatile COVID is, and the revenue adjustments made today really show how hard it is to predict what recovery will look like post-pandemic. With that in mind, policymakers should resist the call for broad-based tax cuts and instead look at sound, strategic investments and targeted support for residents with lower incomes like increasing the Michigan Earned Income Tax Credit, improvements to healthcare access, funding Michigan Reconnect and Futures for Frontliners, and continuing to help make child care more affordable for working parents.”
