Positive child care bills pass House with nearly unanimous support

League continues to advocate for sunset on ratio change, applauds efforts to support family child care centers, expand infant and toddler care

LANSING—The Michigan League for Public Policy issued the following statement on the Michigan House of Representatives’ bipartisan and nearly unanimous passage today of House Bills 5041-5048, bills to improve child care access and better support child care providers. The League previously submitted written testimony on the bills during the committee process, and child care access and affordability continues to be a focus of the League’s at the state and federal level. The statement can be attributed to League External Affairs Director Alex Rossman.

“Today’s vote shows that child care is an issue that resonates in every community and legislative district, and we appreciate the work of Rep. Jack O’Malley, the other bill sponsors and the House as a whole for getting these improvements one step closer to becoming law. Our feedback from parents and research and data show how great the need for infant and toddler care is across the state, especially in rural areas, and that’s an important piece of today’s legislation. The League has also been advocating for family child care networks as a way to help our home-based child care providers with the business side of their work and enable them to focus on what they do best. We continue to advocate for a sunset on HB 5041 to assess the impact of expanding the adult-to-child ratio, and the League will keep pushing for broader child care financing reforms to better support our kids, parents and providers.”
