New Department of Lifelong Education, Advancement, and Potential will create clear path for Michigan’s kids

League applauds focus on early learning and higher education, helping to make sure every child can thrive from cradle through career

LANSING, Mich. — The Michigan League for Public Policy issued the following statement after Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signed an executive order establishing the Michigan Department of Lifelong Education, Advancement, and Potential, or MiLEAP, today. The statement can be attributed to the League’s President and CEO Monique Stanton.

“The League and its Kids Count in Michigan project are committed to a data-driven, two-generation approach to make sure every child and family in Michigan can thrive, regardless of their race, their  income or their ZIP code. That means creating a clear path filled with opportunities from cradle through career and beyond. MiLEAP aims to make that path as smooth as possible, avoiding roadblocks that often come before kids enter kindergarten and after they finish high school. It is our hope that the new department will not only help ensure that kids get a strong start with a high-quality pre-K experience, but will also lead to fewer racial disparities and more economic mobility among young adults and families with low incomes. As recent reports have revealed that Michigan ranks 49th in the nation when it comes to population growth and 32nd for child well-being, it’s imperative that we focus our efforts on Michigan’s people. With the creation of MiLEAP, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has shown that her priorities are with families and their kids.”

Background on MiLEAP from Gov. Whitmer’s Office:

MiLEAP will align all available resources, data and funds around a single vision—building an education system from early learning through postsecondary to help anyone ‘make it’ in Michigan.

MiLEAP has three broad goals:

  • Add capacity in early learning.
  • Accelerate progress towards the state’s Sixty by 30 higher education goal.
  • Prioritize community, regional and state partnerships.

These goals will be pursued by MiLEAP’s three offices:

  1. Office of Early Childhood Education
  2. Office of Higher Education
  3. Office of Education Partnerships

MiLEAP will partner with the Michigan Department of Education and State Board of Education, complementing their long-term planning efforts, and with the new Growing Michigan Together Council as they look at ways to grow the state’s economy and population.
