Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and legislative leaders are working toward a five-fold increase of Michigan’s Earned Income Tax Credit, or EITC, since the beginning of the year, though it has been a longtime objective of Whitmer’s administration.

Legislators are convening Wednesday in the hopes of ironing out details of a broader package of bills, of which the EITC is the most widely-supported facet.

While Michigan’s extension of the federal program is simple enough, how the EITC is measured, who qualifies and how it impacts families isn’t always as straightforward.
