The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services is increasing the number of assets somebody can have to qualify for food, cash and emergency assistance starting Nov. 1, officials announced Thursday.

The department currently requires recipients of State Emergency Relief to have less than $500 in assets, recipients of cash payments through the Family Independence Program to have less than $3,000 in assets and recipients of food assistance through the Food Assistance Program to have less than $5,000 in assets.

Starting Nov. 1, all those asset limits will go to $15,000 and the department will not automatically ask people to produce documents proving how much is in their bank accounts, though it can still do so in certain circumstances.
