Gov. Gretchen Whitmer will ask the Michigan Legislature to cut taxes for retirees and low-income families at a time when the cost of living is high but so is state revenue.

At Wednesday’s State of the State address, Whitmer will push to repeal a tax on retirement income, triple a tax credit for low-income working people and create a rebate for people who purchase an electric vehicle or at-home EV charging station. These proposals will need approval from the Republican-majority Legislature, but there are signs that leading lawmakers are open to working with the Democratic governor to ease the burden on residents amid challenging economic conditions.
