If the government was counting Americans who are pleased that the question of citizenship was not included in Census 2020, Willie DeChavez would be among them.

“I’m glad because it’s unnecessary. We are just people and that’s what you’re counting,” said the Filipino American from Sterling Heights, who is a retired school teacher but remains active as a proud member of Macomb County’s Asian Pacific American population.

He also works to raise awareness about Asian culture as a member of the Sterling Heights’ Ethnic Community Committee and the Asian Pacific Islander American Vote (APIAV), a nonprofit organization that encourages Asian Americans to vote and get involved in their community.

“The Census is important to everyone living in the United States,” DeChavez added.
