Michigan residents’ urgent needs should outweigh politics

LANSING—The Michigan League for Public Policy issued the following statement on the House Appropriations Committee’s party-line passage this morning of COVID-related supplemental appropriations bills, House Bills 4019, 4047, 4048 and 4049. The full House could vote on these bills as early as today. The statement can be attributed to League President and CEO Gilda Z. Jacobs.

“We are a people- and policy- first organization, and the points of contention today lie more in process and politics. This supplemental funding was designed to help people, and it will. But with the installment approach and tying funding to political nonstarters, this funding will not help as many people as it could and it should.

“We are saddened for the Michiganders who urgently need support, not politics. This shouldn’t be a partisan issue. Michigan residents’ struggles aren’t related to their political affiliation and the relief for them shouldn’t, either. This just means we need to redouble our advocacy efforts to ensure that partisanship doesn’t derail the state’s COVID funding—especially the potential loss of already-allocated federal money—and that the Legislature act now to distribute all of the federal dollars to help Michiganders in need immediately.”
