League joins governor, state and local officials and policy advocates to celebrate MI New Economy, Michigan Achievement Scholarship

Gov. Whitmer, state continue great, comprehensive work to make higher education, skilled trades and career paths more accessible

LANSING—The Michigan League for Public Policy issued the following statement on Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s signature today of Senate Bill 842 to establish the Michigan Achievement Scholarship. The statement can be attributed to League External Affairs Director Alex Rossman, who attended today’s bill signing as part of an event on Lawrence Technological University’s campus to recognize the Whitmer administration’s progress on the MI New Economy plan.

“The League was honored to be a part of today’s discussion and celebration of the impact of the MI New Economy Plan, the creation of the Michigan Achievement Scholarship, and the ongoing policy needs for Michigan’s students, workers and communities. Gov. Whitmer and the Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity continue to take an aggressive, holistic approach to remaking and rejuvenating the state’s economy to work better for everyone while tackling people’s various needs.

“By investing in child care and housing needs for workers, MI New Economy also benefits local communities, small businesses and the economy. Michigan Reconnect and Futures for Frontliners help workers pursue a skilled trade, credential or degree and open doors to opportunity, and the Michigan Achievement Scholarship will help make a higher education more affordable–and in turn, more of a reality–for a significant majority of Michigan high school graduates. Today shows that there is strong bipartisan agreement around the needs of our kids, workforce and economy, and that there has been considerable progress in addressing them.”
