League applauds House passage of bill that will eliminate SNAP asset test

LANSING—The Michigan League for Public Policy issued the following statement on the Michigan House of Representatives’ passage of Senate Bill 35, which will eliminate the state’s asset test as an eligibility requirement for food assistance through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). The statement below can be attributed to League President and CEO Monique Stanton.

“We applaud the House for its passage today of Senate Bill 35, which will help more Michiganders who have fallen on hard times with the assistance they need to put food on the table. We hope that Gov. Gretchen Whitmer will swiftly sign this bill so that Michigan can join the 36 other states in our country that have already eliminated SNAP asset tests and can effectively cut through the extra red tape for this vital food assistance.

Michigan’s SNAP asset test is an unnecessary barrier for Michiganders who have fallen on hard times to access food assistance. Eliminating the SNAP asset test will lift up these Michiganders during times of economic hardship and could, in fact, help them to get back on their feet more quickly. Additionally, these are dollars that families spend at their local grocery stores and have a wide economic impact. This legislation will go a long way toward putting food on the table for over 710,500 Michigan households currently receiving SNAP benefits—including more than 531,000 children.

We commend Sen. Jeff Irwin for taking SNAP seriously and reintroducing this commonsense legislation. With the bill’s passage in the Senate this past March and today’s passage in the House, our legislators have done right by Michiganders at a time when food hardship has become more significant due to inflation and the end of pandemic-era emergency allotments.”

The removal of the SNAP asset test has been a key issue for the Michigan League for Public Policy. The League recently provided this testimony before the House Economic Development and Small Business Committee.
