Gov. Whitmer centers Michigan’s people in State of the State address

League echoes call for expansion of EITC, Michigan Reconnect and more

LANSING—The Michigan League for Public Policy issued the following statement on Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s 2023 State of the State address tonight. It can be attributed to League President and CEO Monique Stanton.

“Tonight Gov. Gretchen Whitmer outlined a plan that truly centers the people of Michigan—workers, families and kids—and we’re applauding the fact that she’s focusing on folks who are struggling to get by. Expanding the Earned Income Tax Credit is an incredibly powerful way to help families make ends meet, and the broad, bipartisan support for the credit has been clear. Boosting the EITC, or Working Families Tax Credit, to 30% of the federal credit will help over 1 million kids in Michigan and provide tax relief to over 730,000 families in every county in the state. Making the credit retroactive will help those families with increasing expenses on groceries, rent and other basic needs almost immediately,” said Monique Stanton, President and CEO of the Michigan League for Public Policy.

“We’re really excited about the potential of a plan to expand Michigan Reconnect so that it reaches younger workers. The League just released a report on the state of Michigan’s young adults, and we know that almost a quarter of Michiganders age 18-24 are living in poverty, and 11% are not in school, not working and have no degree beyond high school. Making sure more of these younger Michiganders have free access to the training and support they need as they enter the workforce is crucial.”

“We also applaud the governor’s plan to make kids a priority. Even before COVID, students in Michigan faced barriers to success, and the pandemic just heightened the concerns. We look forward to hearing more about Kids Back on Track and universal pre-K plans,” said Monique Stanton, President and CEO of the Michigan League for Public Policy.

“We also support the governor’s plan to repeal laws that prohibit people from accessing healthcare, including the 1931 law banning abortion. For true economic and social justice to be possible in Michigan, abortion must be kept legal and safe. The  governor’s proposed expansion of the Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act to include protections for the LGBTQ+ community is also crucial so that all Michiganders to have the same civil and economic rights.”

“We’re glad to see that Gov. Whitmer’s plans for the year put the needs of Michiganders front and center. Like the governor, we think these issues should transcend party lines and political agendas, and we’re looking forward to working with her and the Legislature during the upcoming budget process to prioritize investments in Michiganders who need the most support,” said Monique Stanton, President and CEO of the Michigan League for Public Policy.

Background

Last week, the League released its overview of priorities for the 2024 state budget. Called The People’s Budget, the priorities target investments that will improve outcomes for Michiganders who struggle to make ends meet. Many of these investments align with Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s vision.
