In Blog: Factually Speaking

Former State Budget Director Chris Harkins recently joined the League’s Board of Directors. We sat down for a quick interview with him so that community members could get to know him a little better.

Q: How did you get introduced to the League?
A: I have had great interactions with the League, especially the League’s President and CEO Monique Stanton, for a number of years during my time working in state government, most recently as the state’s Budget Director. During that time, the League did a great job of championing a number of people-centered policy priorities that were shared by the Whitmer administration and the Legislature, and I know that important work has continued.

Q: Can you tell us a little about your professional background and how that ties into your commitment to the League?
A: My work in government has been primarily rooted in the state budget, so I have a strong belief that policy only works when there is a full funding plan behind it. I’m looking forward to robust conversations with my fellow Board members and League leadership about how we can work to solve policy issues through the state’s budget, with the ultimate goal of improving the quality of life and economic security of all Michiganders.

Q: Can you share what made you want to serve on the League’s Board of Directors?
A: The League has done a lot of strong work around policy and budget advocacy that lifts up people who have faced barriers to building prosperity. I’m happy to be a part of that. I’m really interested in using my time and resources to assist organizations like the League that are working on issues that align with my own personal views. If I can give back in that way, I’m happy to do so.

Q: As a new member, what do you hope to accomplish alongside other members of the League’s Board of Directors?
A: That’s a great question. As a new member, I’m looking forward to listening and learning from my fellow Board members about our current landscape and issues, and then working collaboratively to best support the League leadership and staff so that they are well positioned to continue on in their important work.

Q: What would you like to see Michigan leaders and the Michigan Legislature focus on this year?
A: I think when you are fully engaged in legislative and budget work, it can be easy to forget that there are real people who are impacted by the choices that are made. Especially in our current political climate, it’s important that our state leaders and lawmakers keep the people of Michigan central to their decisions.

Q: Anything else you would like to share about yourself?
A: My wife, son and I live in Lansing and I’ve been a Michigander my whole life. I’m fortunate to have traveled much of Michigan and I have a deep love for our state, and I am grateful to be  involved here in my community. It seems more important than ever to make sure we’re doing the best we can for our friends and neighbors. As a family, we enjoy traveling and, though I’m no longer working in state government, we’re actively trying to see all 50 state capitols. We are up to 40 now, with a few more planned on the horizon.
