Michigan’s eligibility requirements for unemployment benefits, such as the amount of money a worker needs to make in order to qualify for benefits, are more prohibitive than its Midwest peers, a report released Thursday found.

The result is that Michigan had the lowest unemployment insurance coverage of any Midwest state in the last quarter of 2020, a figure that measures the percentage of employees in the state that are covered by the unemployment insurance system if they were to become unemployed. Michigan’s 72% compares with 79% or above for other states in the region, the report said.
