‘Build Back Better’ will help millions make ends meet

Investments will increase opportunity, reduce poverty and narrow racial disparities

LANSING—The Michigan League for Public Policy issued the following statement on the Build Back Better legislation passed out of the United States House of Representatives today. It can be attributed to Michigan League for Public Policy President & CEO Monique Stanton.

“With the new Build Back Better legislation, Congress has followed through on their commitment to a better, more equitable America and Michigan. These investments will help millions of get ahead by providing improved tax credits for parents, affordable health coverage, stable housing, reliable child care, and other basic needs. The legislation will broaden opportunity and reduce poverty substantially, particularly among children. It also will narrow the glaring racial disparities that continue to plague the nation as a result of generations of racism and other forms of discrimination. The House has taken bold action and the Senate should follow suit to quickly get the bill across the finish line.

“The Child Tax Credit and the federal Earned Income Tax Credit are already some of the most successful anti-poverty tools we have. These credits help kids by helping their parents make ends meet.  The CTC allows tens of millions of parents to pay for necessities such as utilities, food, child care, and transportation, and the impacts are felt throughout the local economy. While we hoped to see the credit permanently increased, locking in full refundability for perpetuity is still a major win in the fight against child poverty. As the Senate now takes up Build Back Better, time is of the essence. If Congress fails to pass the legislation by the end of the year, these improvements to the CTC will expire. With costs of everyday essentials rising, Michigan families are counting on Congress to support Build Back Better.

“Overall, this package constitutes the most far-reaching set of investments in children, workers, families, and health coverage that we’ve seen in a generation. These advances will be game-changing in a lot of ways, moving the nation toward economic, racial, and health justice.”
