Budget surplus, bipartisan agreement sets stage for transformational investments in Michigan’s people

The League continues to push for investments in child care, worker supports, essential safety net programs, and weighted, equitable school funding

LANSING—The Michigan League for Public Policy issued the following statement on today’s Consensus Revenue Estimating Conference numbers and the news that Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and the Legislature have agreed to bipartisan negotiations on the state budget and federal COVID relief and recovery dollars. It can be attributed to League President and CEO Gilda Z. Jacobs.

“Now that we officially have consensus on revenues, the real work begins on reaching a consensus on the budget and the state’s funding priorities. And between yesterday’s announcement by the governor and Republican legislative leaders and the funding surplus announced today, an ambitious, bipartisan, negotiated budget that invests in Michiganders’ pressing needs is more realistic than ever. As Michigan moves through the funding tranches and into the budget trenches, policymakers need to remember that COVID-19 is the enemy and the rest of us are all on the same side—the governor and the Legislature, Democrat and Republican, businesses and workers, elected officials and the people they serve.

“This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to counter the challenges facing Michiganders before, during and after the pandemic and make bold investments in our people: child care supports for workers, kids and providers; jobs, skills and training for workers; equitable school funding that is weighted by students’ and schools’ needs; and the safety net programs that have been so essential during this crisis. A compromise has been struck on process, and now we hope it can be replicated on priorities. We urge policymakers to build on this week’s bipartisan goodwill and meet this moment with transformational policies to make the most of this transformational state and federal funding, investing in the programs and policy changes that can and will permanently improve the future of our people and our state.”
