A former colleague of mine had a saying that she applied to almost everything in life: “Must be present to win.” Whether it was accepting invitations to lunch, showing up to meetings or making real time for herself, she had learned that if you’re not putting yourself in the mix, you’re not going to find what you seek, whether you’re seeking simple joy or more tangible “wins.”
The same thing works in the world of policy. For our process to work, we can’t just be present on election day. We must be present every day. We must be in the mix. And while summer may seem like a time to sit back, there are some urgent issues we need you to act on.
Right now, we need you to be present so the people of Michigan can win.
Please take a moment and learn about, then weigh in on, each of these pressing issues. Please be present.
Stop this anti-family, anti-immigrant HUD proposal
A recent proposal by the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) would change the rules for distributing federal housing assistance to immigrant families. Under the proposed rule change, an individual could receive housing assistance only if every other person living in the home were a U.S. citizen or eligible immigrant. Thus, mixed-status families would have to choose between staying together and keeping a roof over their heads. And the Michigan League for Public Policy is calling on our partners throughout the state to join us in submitting comments opposing this unjust plan.
Encourage the Michigan Legislature to boost the EITC
The Federal Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) provides relief to workers with lower incomes in the form of a credit on their tax returns. In 2006, lawmakers in Michigan passed a law that provided 20% of workers’ federal EITC on state income taxes for qualifying individuals. Unfortunately, that amount was reduced to 6% through legislation passed in 2011 under Gov. Rick Snyder. But there is hope! Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has proposed doubling Michigan’s EITC to 12% in her budget. The League is part of a broad coalition in support of this boost, and we hope you will urge your state lawmakers to support it as well!
Halt Trump administration’s dangerous changes to how poverty is defined
By shrinking the poverty line over time, the Trump Administration is proposing to reduce the number of people who qualify for health care, nutrition and other aid. This change would affect people who need Medicaid, Medicare, SNAP, school meals, LIHEAP and many other programs. Please take action here, and be sure to take a look at the resource page.
Make sure the 2020 Census COUNTS!
The strength of census statistics and data helps inform many public policy proposals at all levels of government. But intimidating tactics like a citizenship question will make the 2020 count a difficult one, and Michigan could lose funding for important programs. We need you to get the word out and make sure ALL Michiganders are counted. Join us here.
Protect shelter services for all
Along with its dangerous anti-immigrant proposal, HUD has announced plans to reverse the Equal Access Rule, an Obama-era regulation prohibiting federally funded emergency shelters that segregate by sex from discriminating against people based on gender identity.
More than 1 in 4 transgender Michiganders has been evicted or denied a home based on their gender identity or expression, and more than 1 in 3 has experienced homelessness at some point in their lives. Once the rule is published, we need you to weigh in and protect shelter services for Michiganders!
So please, always be present. You have the ability to help Michiganders win!
