A Message From Monique Stanton, President & CEO of the Michigan League for Public Policy

“The brutal and unjustified killing of unarmed Black men by police is not an anomaly in our nation, a fact that makes the April 4 killing of Patrick Lyoya, a Congolese immigrant, in a Grand Rapids neighborhoodin our own stateeven more disturbing. We want to acknowledge the real pain and suffering that is occurring across Michigan and our nation right now, particularly for Black people, who continue to carry the weight of senseless violence against their communities.

It is time for real, systemic rebuilding in the United States. Police violence is a leading cause of death among young Black men in this country, and it is time to move beyond words into action and policy change to stop this horrific pattern.

To Patrick Lyoya’s family we send our deepest condolences, and our hearts are with our Grand Rapids community partners and others who are feeling deeply the pain of this violence in their home. The League remains dedicated to promoting racial equity and justice, and we will continue to seek out and support partners who are committed to protecting Black lives.”
