Jail populations in Michigan have increased over time and roughly a quarter of people entering the jail system have a serious mental illness, but, thanks to a months-long study, state lawmakers have new recommendations on ways to overhaul the criminal justice system with the goal of improving the outcomes for everyone.

The Jail and Pretrial Incarceration Task Force, a bipartisan group with 21 members created through executive action by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer last spring, announced 18 ideas to improve the system. In partnership with Pew Charitable Trust, the task force took a deep-dive into where the fault lines lie within the system and curated a list of ways to help address those issues.
