MLPP criticizes House passage of funding deal that fails to extend vital health care tax credits

League urges Congress to take immediate action to protect affordable health care for millions of Americans

LANSING — The Michigan League for Public Policy has issued the following statement in response to the U.S. House vote approving a federal funding deal that leaves out enhanced premium tax credits for health care coverage. The statement can be attributed to League President and CEO Monique Stanton.

“With today’s vote, both the U.S. House and Senate have now approved a federal funding package that fails to include the enhanced premium tax credits that have made health care more affordable for millions of Americans, including nearly half a million Michiganders. Ending the government shutdown was essential, but it should not have come at the expense of health and financial security for families all around the state and nation. This outcome is deeply disappointing and threatens to undo years of progress in expanding access to affordable coverage.

“Without these credits, premiums will soar. Most enrollees will see an average increase of 75% and up to 90% for people living in rural areas. For example, a typical 60-year-old couple making $85,000 could see their monthly premium rise from $602 to $2,647, an annual increase of roughly $24,500.

“We’re grateful to those House members who voted against this harmful deal and for standing up for Michiganders who will be most affected if these credits expire at the end of the year. Their leadership reflects a clear understanding that affordable health care is not a luxury, it’s a necessity. As for those Michigan House members who voted in favor of this deal, we are deeply disappointed. They have failed nearly half a million Michiganders who will be impacted by the loss of these credits.

“It is urgent that Congress turn its attention to passing legislation to extend the enhanced premium tax credits. Every day of inaction brings millions of Americans closer to unaffordable coverage or medical debt. Lawmakers still have time to do what’s right and make sure health care remains accessible and affordable for all.”
