League weighs in on U.S. Senate passage of federal funding deal that leaves out enhanced premium tax credits for health care coverage

Ending federal government shutdown is crucial, but Senate deal sets nation on harmful path for health and well-being of millions of Americans, including Michiganders

Lansing—The Michigan League for Public Policy has issued the following statement on the U.S. Senate’s passage of a federal funding deal that leaves out enhanced premium tax credits for health care coverage. The statement can be attributed to League President and CEO Monique Stanton.

“We are deeply disappointed that the U.S. Senate has passed a federal funding deal that leaves out enhanced premium tax credits, which are critically important in lowering the cost of health care for over 20 million people in the U.S., including 484,000 Michiganders.

Without the continued credits, premiums are expected to increase by 75% for the average enrollee and 90% for people in rural areas. To put that into perspective, a typical 60-year-old couple making $85,000 will see monthly marketplace premiums jump from $602 to $2,647—an annual increase of roughly $24,500.

“We want to thank Sens. Gary Peters and Elissa Slotkin for voting against the deal and speaking out against the fact that it fails to address health care costs. We appreciate that they stood up for the people of Michigan who will be significantly harmed if the tax credits are allowed to expire at the end of the year.

“Ending the federal shutdown is imperative, and the continued funding of SNAP is a necessity. But it is not enough. This deal sets our nation on a harmful path when it comes to the health and well-being of people across our state and nation. There is no guarantee that Republicans will make good on their word when it comes to a future vote on the extension of the tax credits, although we sincerely urge them to do so for the sake of the people they serve. The families across our country who stand to lose their coverage or face medical debt are counting on their lawmakers to do what’s right for them.”
