League slams federal administration for shutdown that will harm Michigan workers, families

LANSING—The Michigan League for Public Policy issued the following statement on the federal government shutdown. The statement can be attributed to League President and CEO Monique Stanton.

“This shutdown isn’t politics as usual, and it certainly doesn’t show true American leadership. The Trump administration is acting outside the law, and Michigan families will pay the price. All shutdowns run the risk of cutting off vital services, threatening federal jobs and delaying benefits families depend on. But in this case, the president is ignoring bipartisan funding decisions and slashing programs Congress already approved, from healthy food for kids to funding for schools and health care. That’s not just harmful, it’s illegal.

“It’s worth noting that the federal government is the largest employer in the state—larger than any of the Big Three automakers or health care systems. Nearly a quarter of federal employees in Michigan are with the Department of Veterans Affairs, and nearly 10,000 are employed by the departments of Defense, Army, Navy, Air Force and Homeland Security. There are also 18,800 federal workers in Michigan with the U.S. Postal Service, making sure residents, especially in rural areas, are able to receive mail and packages. If Congress doesn’t step in, Michiganders could face higher health premiums, cuts to housing and mental health care, and those federal workers who protect and serve us will face job losses.

“Workers and families shouldn’t be pawns in a political game, and no president should be allowed to defy the law at their expense.”
