League examines federal threats to housing in new analysis

Proposed federal funding cuts to affordable housing, homelessness and community development programs will worsen Michigan’s affordable housing crisis

Lansing—The Michigan League for Public Policy has published a new installment in its The Stakes are High series that focuses on proposed federal funding cuts to housing programs that will create a dire situation for the more than 1 million Michiganders already burdened with high housing costs.

In addition to the administration’s proposed budget cuts, a chilling Executive Order has also been issued that seeks to abandon evidenced-based, humane approaches to mental illness and homelessness and instead seeks to expand forced institutionalization and the criminalization of people who are unhoused and those struggling with mental health disabilities.

“While access to safe, affordable housing has been an issue in Michigan for a long time, the Trump administration’s heartless plans to slash housing funds and further criminalize homeless people will significantly worsen poverty and homelessness while also enabling discrimination and making Michigan communities less safe,” said Michigan League for Public Policy President and CEO Monique Stanton.

“The Trump administration’s budget plan calls for a more than $31 billion reduction in funding for affordable housing, homelessness and community development programs. These are unprecedented, devastating cuts that will make it significantly harder for people in Michigan and other states to secure and keep a safe, affordable roof over their heads, while also stripping away much-needed support and actively harming those in our communities who currently don’t have a roof over their heads.”

While the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate have put forth budget proposals that largely reject the administration’s extreme housing cuts, they still fail to meet the needs of American families as the cost of living continues to skyrocket and their access to food and health care is threatened by the recent passage of the federal Republican megabill. Even level funding would be an effective cut, disproportionately harming children, older adults and people with disabilities.

The League’s latest The Stakes are High installment calls for community members to protect housing for Michiganders by pushing back against the Trump administration’s housing proposal and joining the National Low-Income Housing Coalition in urging Congress to come up with a better plan to solve housing insecurity in the U.S. The latest installment in The Stakes are High series on housing threats can be viewed here.
