Michigan families face crushing Medicaid losses under House GOP plan

LANSING, Mich. – Monique Stanton, president and CEO of the Michigan League for Public Policy, released the following statement on behalf of the Protect MI Care coalition reacting to the proposed cuts to Medicaid released by the House Energy and Commerce Committee:

“The House Energy and Commerce Committee’s proposal is an all-out assault on Medicaid and a direct threat to the health, stability, and economic well-being of millions of Michiganders. The plan unveiled last night would rip away coverage from up to 512,000 adults in Michigan through punitive work requirements, slash support for nursing homes and hospitals, and strip billions in federal funding from our health care system, devastating care across the state, particularly in rural and underserved areas.

“More than 2.6 million Michiganders—1 in 4 people in our state—rely on Medicaid for vital care. This includes nearly 1 million children, 3 in 5 nursing home residents, and thousands of working adults, caregivers, and people with disabilities who count on Medicaid not just to survive, but to live and work with dignity. These cuts would push families off coverage, overwhelm hospitals with uncompensated care, and deepen workforce shortages in essential health care services.

“Let’s be clear: the numbers don’t lie. Medicaid brings over $19 billion to Michigan, supporting care, providers, and thousands of jobs. Proposed tax reforms in this plan would cost our state up to $3 billion annually, including a $2.3 billion loss to hospitals and a $325 million cut to nursing homes. And the administrative red tape required to enforce work requirements would waste an additional $155 million in the first year alone, all to force people off the coverage they already need and often already qualify for.

“This proposal, released on Mother’s Day no less, would worsen maternal health outcomes and increase the risk of obstetrics unit closures across Michigan. Moms don’t need medals—we need access to health care for our kids, our families, and our communities.

“Voters in Michigan are not asking for Medicaid to be gutted. In fact, 83% of Michiganders want Medicaid funding increased or preserved. Medicaid is the foundation of our health care system. Cuts to Medicaid mean cuts to care. Period.

“We strongly urge Michigan’s congressional delegation—on both sides of the aisle—to reject this reckless plan. The Protect MI Care coalition—over 150 organizations strong—will continue to fight against any cuts or caps to Medicaid because our health, economy and future depend on it.”
