League strongly opposes House bills that seek to cause further harm to immigrant residents and take control away from local governments in Michigan

House Bills 4338-4342 perpetuate harmful rhetoric around immigrant residents and stigmatize valued community members across Michigan

LANSING—The Michigan League for Public Policy strongly opposes House Bills 4338-4342, which were reported on party-line votes by the Michigan House Government Operations Committee today. The statement below can be attributed to League President and CEO Monique Stanton.

“We are already in a day and age where actions by our federal government and rhetoric surrounding our immigrant neighbors have caused irreparable harm and created alarm among people who live and work in our local communities and contribute significantly to our state economy. This package of short-sighted, dangerous and unnecessary bills will only cause further harm to the more than 740,000 immigrants who have made their home here in our state. These are our neighbors, co-workers, small business owners, health care providers, child care providers, educators and friends of our kids at school. These are workers, families and children who make our communities rich with diversity and have helped to grow our state’s population at a time when Michigan is losing people to other states and facing a natural decline in its populace. This legislation is also redundant—federal and state laws already restrict immigrants from accessing many federal benefits. And it will stoke fear, keeping families with eligible children from accessing the benefits that they are, in fact, eligible to receive.

“Not only do these bills target immigrant residents, they also target Michigan municipalities by undermining their local control, further constraining their already limited resources and forcing them to assume significant financial risks — namely potential lawsuits and state funding — if they prioritize local resources over federal responsibilities. To be clear, immigration policy and enforcement is a federal responsibility. It is not, nor should it be, the responsibility of local governments. It’s also important to note that local communities that have ‘sanctuary’ policies have not and will not do anything to stop Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents from carrying out their enforcement.

“Members of the Michigan House would be doing an egregious disservice to our local communities, while causing further harm to immigrant residents in Michigan if they were to move this harmful package of bills forward. We are already seeing on the larger national scale how ICE’s poor enforcement standards have resulted in racial profiling and the unlawful detainment of lawfully residing citizens without due process. This legislation would only perpetuate these unlawful actions right here in Michigan and put our neighbors at risk.”
