Former State Budget Director Chris Harkins joins Michigan League for Public Policy’s Board of Directors

Harkins currently serves as the Executive Director of Strategic Projects & Initiatives at MSU Finance

LANSING, Mich. – The Michigan League for Public Policy is pleased to announce that Chris Harkins has joined the League’s Board of Directors as its newest member.

Harkins currently serves as the Executive Director of Strategic Projects & Initiatives at Michigan State University’s Finance Office and, prior to that, served as the State of Michigan’s Budget Director for over two years, from October 2021 to December 2023. He also previously served as the Director of the Michigan Senate Fiscal Agency, as a Senior Policy Advisor at Jackson National Life, and in various roles in state government, including within the State Budget Office, the Department of Technology, Management and Budget, and for the Michigan House of Representatives.

“We are so fortunate to have someone like Chris join our Board of Directors. He brings to the table extensive knowledge on all aspects of the state budget and, in his role as State Budget Director, he was a part of the creation of many critically important things that the League advocated for and celebrated, including the expansion of the state’s Earned Income Tax Credit and the creation of the Michigan Achievement Scholarship. We know that Chris shares the same values and ethics as our other Board members and his expertise will be invaluable as the Board continues on in its efforts to build out our organization’s fund development capacity,” said Michigan League for Public Policy President and CEO Monique Stanton.

“As the newest member of the League’s Board, I’m looking forward to listening and learning from my fellow Board members about our current landscape and working alongside them to ensure the League is well positioned for future success,” said Harkins. “I think it is important to remember that there are real people at the end of every budget and policy decision that is made, which is why the League’s people-centered work is so important. As someone who shares in the League’s commitment to improving the quality of life for Michiganders across our state, I am honored to be able to lend my time and resources to the League’s Board.”

Harkins has a Bachelor of Arts in International Relations from Michigan State University and a master’s degree in Community and Economic Development from Pennsylvania State University.

He also has a long history of giving back to his community through volunteerism. In addition to serving as the newest member of the League’s Board of Directors, Harkins is an appointed Commissioner for the Lansing Board of Water and Light, serves as a board member for the Michigan History Foundation, and previously served as the Chair of the Board of Directors for Habitat for Humanity Capital Region and as a member of the Board of Directors for the Arts Council of Greater Lansing.
