League condemns U.S. Department of Education cuts that threaten vital services for Michigan students

LANSING, Mich. – The Michigan League for Public Policy strongly condemned the announced cuts to the U.S. Department of Education as the Trump administration attempts to dismantle the department. The below statement can be attributed to League President and CEO Monique Stanton:

“The proposed staffing cuts at the U.S. Department of Education are deeply concerning and pose a serious threat to Michigan’s students and families. The Department is critical to ensuring that 1.4 million children across the state have access to a high-quality education, closing funding gaps for vulnerable students, and making college more affordable through federal financial aid programs like Pell Grants and FAFSA.

“These cuts would slow financial aid processing, threaten funding to our schools, and hinder essential oversight that helps students—especially those in special education programs and low-income communities. With nearly every public school in Michigan relying on Title I funds, these reductions could create further inequities in our education system.

“We cannot afford to weaken the support systems that so many Michigan students and families rely on. The Michigan League for Public Policy urges federal policymakers to reject these cruel and harmful cuts and prioritize our students’ educational success and well-being.”
